Surprise!!
Rob has always wanted a surprise party...so for a little over a year, I had plans to throw one for him. The day Seth started school, I started scrapbooking his childhood album (which was his present). New year's day, I started making phone calls (which took me weeks to sneak in) to start arranging things.
As several pointed out to me Saturday, I'm not that great of a liar (which I think is a good thing!), but this made planning the party SO difficult!! I was constantly thinking of a lie to cover a possible question he might ask about something suspicious or to cover someone's slip of the tongue. (Man, I'm glad that's done - lying is exhausting!)
But it came together...and the day had more surprises for all of us...read on!
Waiting (Jacob was assigned the job of coming up with something to get Rob out of the house from 11-12...he did such a great job, he went "the extra mile" and took until after 1.)
Natalie was just cute here.
And finally he arrives!
And yes, he was really surprised and suspected nothing! (His birthday was on Sunday, the 25th, so having the party on the 31st really threw him off...yes!)
checking out the scrapbook and the lighting of the 30 candles
(Isn't the little girl's pout in the background so cute? That's Carolyn's best friend.)
(The cake is covered in plastic wrap so no one had to eat the tiny drops of spit that happen when you blow out candles...ever seen food techs on food network? it's true! Maybe we watch too much tv.)
OH, that's homemade chocolate cake with homemade white chocolate icing...and I don't do cake decorating...unfortunately. I can make it taste good, but I can't make it look pretty.
And Rob's friend/neighbor/coworker Frank who cooked ALL the burgers and hot dogs for me and wasn't even there until after Rob with the final batch off the grill! We owe him a good favor for his hard work.
(I actually missed him blowing out the candles b/c I had to go put out another fire...Natalie was fighting with another little girl.)
And thanks to Matt Linder for taking most of the pictures (pretty much all the ones I have posted in this are his.)
On to the rest of the day...and sorry, I don't have pictures for this part, but I bet my brothers do...(click on Jacob, Jared, or even Rob for their perspectives sometime later this week)
The rest of the day is a long story...if you don't have time, skip it!
My vision of what the rest of the day was supposed to be like:
Clean up party. Dad take David to youth activity. (He planned to go at 7 to be at the dance.) Someone take Jacob to go get his car (he left it when Rob picked him up from the eye doctor with "dilated pupils").
Mom and I look for fabric at the sewing store (for the blessing dress.)
Hang out with family until womanhood roadshow at 7. (Rob would go to a baptism at 5.)
What actually happened:
The party got cleaned. After an aggravating moment in the car deciding who could fit and who was going, some of us left to get the car and see Jacob's new apt. (Will and Jared stayed here riding Seth's scooter down the hill.)
Dad and Jacob came back in Jacob's car and Mom and I went to the fabric store in her car. (David was at the youth thing.) (The fabric store visit ran long because we ran in to a friend from Hartsville, but other than that plans seemed to be fine.)
We got home with only 2 hours left until we had to leave to go to the roadshow that night. The twins were still napping, so Mom started helping me re-arrange pictures on the walls....and that's where the day's plan changed.
Jared came running in and asked for a warm wet washcloth. Immediately Mom and Dad were like, "who fell!?" (Dad had told them riding down our steep neighborhood hill on my 6 year old's scooter was a bad idea. No one listens to Dad anymore.)
It was (accident prone with the worst luck) Jacob. He had blood running down his face from one eyebrow, a ripped sleeve, and was STILL talking on the blasted cell phone as we tried telling him the gash looked a little big for bandaids or steristrips.
Mom tried patching it up at home, and then looked for an urgent care (those things are never open when you really need them), and finally ended up at the emergency room...waiting.
Dad told Seth to go hide the scooter from his uncles so they couldn't do anything stupid with it again. (When we left for church Sunday, I noticed the scooter hiding behind one of the bushes. haha...OK, I guess someone listens to Dad.)
After a while, Dad and Will went next to wait with them. (Mom was going to come with me to the roadshow.) Rob was still at the baptism.
Kaitlyn woke up from her nap finally. "Grammy hold you?" Poor baby...Grammy wouldn't be home until time to go to the roadshow if even then.
When I went to pick Mom up from the hospital to go to the roadshow, she really missed her time away from the kids, so we skipped the roadshow and I took her back to our house. Family first.
Rob and Jared then left for the hospital to relieve Dad. Dad and Will came back to get Mom, went to pick up David and go home (3 hour drive). Kristen was helping me get the kids to bed.
Rob and Jared brought back bandaged Jacob. No more blood, but you could see the swelling of the eyelid under the bandage where they'd given him shots of anesthetic before the stitches. ewww
The kids weren't really worried about him. Carolyn did ask what Jacob thought of her braids. (Kristen had to point out that Carolyn was fishing for a compliment and wanted someone to say she was beautiful.)
And that's how the day went.
The party was fun. Seeing family was fun. I'll see the roadshow some other time hopefully. Having Jacob bust his eye...not so fun, but what's life without the unexpected? At least we get hamburgers and hotdogs for supper with ice cream and cake for at least one more meal this week. :)
