Making a mess

We like to re-arrange and change and that makes messes, so I've nearly trashed the entire house for our big

"Room Change 08"!

(That is making our two kids bedrooms be a 'boys room' and a 'girls room'.
Lucky for Seth, he's the only boy.)

1st goal: make a quilt for Seth

I want: matches his curtains and fits a twin sized bunk bed.
Seth's want: dinosaurs and lizards, and crocodiles on it.
No matching fabric with those things (in fact, no fabric at all with those things). So, I can appliqué, why not do it? Yeah, I like to plan things that are beyond my skill level...not too bad I don't think (Carolyn now wants a cat quilt...I think she'll get iron ons!):

Kept the rest of it pretty simple.

The plaid is the fabric for the roman shade I made him a few years ago.
He likes it: (It will go on the bottom bunk once he has his own room)

2nd goal: Make toy shelves for each room

(which I've been requesting since...well, about the time Seth started getting toys!)

What did we do with the babies while we built these? In the pool in front of the garage (aka workshop) of course. (The big kids put their pool out beside the babies'.)

Yeah, I didn't do much - Rob did most of that project. (I was the architect and project manager.)

  • Rest of goals (this coming saturday):
    • build the second set of shelves
    • Disassemble two cribs, move, reassemble.
    • Move bottom bunk.
    • Disassemble top bunk, move in pieces, and reassemble.
(which involves taking out a bunch of 4" bolts - thank goodness for drills).
I got impatient and couldn't wait, so I just thought I'd switch the furniture myself!

Carolyn was so easy - she helped a little, and then went to do 'crafts' and left me alone.
So, the babies were less than cooperative, so into the first re-assembled crib they went:

After about 20 minutes of Kaitlyn attacking Natalie for her pacifier (yes, they both had one - Kaitlyn just likes to attack Natalie), I decided to momentarily abandon the top bunk disassembly to (in record time) move the crib from one room to the other. Ahh, peace is restored in Nottingham:
Couldn't find the little thing-a-majig to make the drill hold the socket, so BY HAND with a ratched and socket set, I disassembled the top bunk (which involved 18 (YES 18!) 4" bolts -- did I mention by hand?), moved the pieces, and reassembled it -- using the assistance of a 5 year old - to hold up the mattress support while I got at least 2 corners secured...yeah, that was fun. At least the babies took naps during the reassembly of the bunk bed.

Seth's 'new' room is pretty much done, but you can't see it until we switch the curtains and I take pictures...then Rob will post the changes on his blog next week... (yeah, you know that blog he rarely posts to called "where's the couch?")

And I haven't even dealt with the girls' room yet!

Another project for another day...and the house is actually mostly in order - and that's amazing since I've trashed it both yesterday and today for this switching around! (ok, so don't look too hard at the den - but that wasn't the focus this week!)

It's worth it though - it will help with the organization of stuff/toys, keep most of the little stuff shut in a room all day (that would be Seth's while he's at school), give Seth a place where he can go away from all the girlyness that pervades this house, and most of all - keep boys and girls separate...since I think "it's time".

I'm SO impressed! And by the way, what is applique? That bedspread is amazing that you made for Seth. . . I would have totally slaughtered something like that if I tried. :)

As far as disassembling/reassembling the bunk beds. . . wow. I'll admit I probably would have waited for my hubby to come home to help me with that one too! What can I say? I'll take the help when I can get it. :)

Way to go! Its so fun to catch up with you through these blogs. :)

Oh how I remember the "lets make this little house full of people look a little bigger by rearranging the rooms"! I think Jared slept in everyroom in the house except the bathroom. Yes,Kitchen too... on his fouton while we painted and fixed up the downstairs room. Those good ole days! ( It does give you a real accomplishment of a day well spent)
Keep up the good work. You must have had a good teacher!

You are basically superwoman! I wish I was in SC to help you! I've just been sitting around my apartment with nothing to do like a lazy butt. I'm impressed and I agree with Jacob...I have no idea how you do what all you do!

Oh - how I wish I was a supermom! (There was much fussing during this week - as every week - b/c I have a lack of patience.)

And mom, I do remember all the room changes we used to have. I remember once sitting in my room on my bed while you and dad were moving a dresser and there was 'stuff' everywhere (I think I was switching with the boys and I went to the back corner and they went to the room with the scary window in the middle of the house that everyone walked through ALL THE TIME.) I did not realize Jared had a turn sleeping in the kitchen...haha.
