April 1, 2008

So I was trying to type something like, "We're expecting" or "We're having twins again" for an "April Fool's Joke", but as I tried to type it, I just couldn't! The only thing funny about me having more kids right now would be the fact that there must be something wrong with me that needed medicating! My uncle actually asked me about 6 months ago if I was pregnant again. (What was he thinking?!) I told him we had found the birth control aisle at the grocery store. :)

Other than April fool's, here's the event of the week:

We went over to visit a friend who had a new baby (her first is about 15 months old). While visiting, Seth managed to put a tear in the little girl's ball pit. So, today we went to target and $30 later, we have replaced it.

(Hopefully Rob can fix the torn one so it's useable and mine can play in it.) Rather than time out (which seems to have little effect on Seth lately), I decided he would have to work off his debt by doing extra work (30 chores - 1 per dollar) other than his normal chores: dumping the little trashcans throughout the house, cleaning his toys, and making his bed (none of which he does anyways). So, I am open to ideas. He is capable of very little.

Thus far I have thought of:
  • rotating the laundry
  • folding the entire basket of towels (instead of just the washcloths)
  • cleaning the baseboards
  • cleaning the doorframes
  • sponge mopping the bathroom floors
  • windexing
  • dusting

Any more? (It can't be too fun. and it can't make more mess for me to clean up)

My manageable children:

I wish I could get a good video of the babies 'wrestling'. They are so cute. A few minutes ago, Kaitlyn was standing over near the computer desk where I'm sitting, and Natalie comes stumbling over and tackles her to the ground! Ha ha! It was really cute.
They also like to play peek-a-boo with the curtains or around furniture. See Video below (about 1 minute long). Thanks to the big bruise on Kate's head (a lot better this week) we rearranged the room to put the blanket chest (the culprit) out of the middle of the room. Maybe Rob will post pictures of the changes on his site (named "Where's the Couch" which keeps up with our constant changes). So, the video is from before the re-arrangement.

When Patti was 8, she and two girls at church were swinging on the bathroom doors and one bracket broke and the door was hanging. Patti was mortified and came straight home and told me. We had talked a lot in FHE about repentence since her baptism and we took it as an opportunity to teach her that the Bishop can help when your mistake is too big to fix yourself. We had an AWESOME bishop who interviewed her very carefully and seriously and made her feel so good about confessing. He explained restitution in words she could understand and told her that 1 other girl had confessed and brought all the $ in her piggy bank (@$3-$4) to replace the bracket and since Patti had no money, he said she could do a chore the janitors were suppose to do so they could take their time to repair the door. (this was in the good old days when we had janitors)He suggested vacuuming the entire Church building. It took her three days (I'd take her and she'd vacuum for about 2 hours each day). She was hot sweaty and probably did a much less than perfect job but she felt so GREAT when she finally finished. (and she thinks no one absolutely no one regardless of age should be allowed to eat in the chapel!) She learned a lesson she will never ever forget. Seth will too. and it probably WILL cause you extra work but it will be worth the lesson! Just reward him/praise him when he's done so he will feel GREAT about the process of repentence and restitution! p.s. I vote for scrubbing baseboards and if you don't have 30, he can come to my house!!!

Hey Beth...
I wish I had some great words of wisdom for you on Seth but I STILL have trouble getting Lauren to do her work and I've tried everything. I wish you better luck! hahaha! The video of the twins is adorable. They just keep getting cuter and cuter. Love, Jean

oooh, that is hard for a Grammy to make suggestions on. Was it on purpose? I know for every action there is a consequence so I understand the chores. I know he wants to be a good little boy.

THe twins video is too cute!!! It made me smile.
Love ya,
MOM
Thanks for the story Libbi. So far, Seth has enjoyed more of the jobs than not. He has worked off 7 of 30 jobs so far. He folded laundry, cleaned Kate's highchair (with a toothbrush...he did a GREAT job - I think I might add that to his normal chore list - except Carolyn will need an old toothbrush b/c they fought over who GOT TO DO IT!), he helped with the 72 hour kit update (he expressed thanks in his prayer tonight that we could do the 60 hour kits), and a few others.
I think I will not have him vacuum anymore - that one was too hard for his size.

You are such a great mom...I love that you teach your children all the time in every way (that is why you have such great kids!) You never cease to amaze me...I hope my girls are as good as you one day! I love you, Jean
